Conquering Cypress

So, I was feeling a little down and out this week and I just felt like I couldn't run like I used to. That and I am really missing all my old running routes back in Utah that had hills! Okay, maybe you think I'm crazy because I am missing hills, but really, there are no hills around here! The only ones are off of ditches/bayous around here. Call me crazy, but running up and down a big ditch it a little weird! I might just have to do it though.

Today I was so excited for my run. My husband and I have been house hunting in the area and my run just so happened to pass the house we are looking at and it's by a little lake that you can run around too. I got up at 6am and was out the door by 6:30am and it was 76 degrees out! I was so excited because it felt so cool outside! I was LOVING it! It was still so humid though. I decided to just suck up my pride and I made the decision that I would be happy with a slower pace because let's be honest, out here with the heat and humidity- you just have to slow down a little on these longer runs.

I felt so good and strong. I only stopped to walk when I got lost (haha...) I had to call my husband to look at a map and figure out where I was. Apparently I took the 2nd right instead of the 1st... oops! I was able to run pass "our" home and I ran the little lake that's behind the house. It was so refreshing to be able to run by water. There was a little family of ducks that crossed my trail too as I was running. So cute!

I think one of the best parts about this run was that other than the part where I got lost- I felt confident about where I was going! I took a small back way to get back to the house we're staying in right now and I just felt like I finally lived here. Does that make any sense? I mean, I am still missing having a running buddy or friends my age out here, but I think slowly in time I will get there.

Here are my stats so you can check out my run. Heh, when I say there are no hills check the elevation!! I ran for 10 miles and it was all flat! I just hope this doesn't kill me in San Antonio!

Houston Heights 5k

Okay, so last week I heard about a 5k that was going on downtown from my weights class instructor. I looked it up and I was able to sign up for it (2 days before the race... haha).

I am so glad I did it! I am definitely NOT in Utah anymore!! It was so humid and the air was just so dang heavy!! It was 85 degrees at 7:30am too! Anyways, the race started off with the national anthem sung by an older lady. Am I an awful person if I thought it was really painful to listen to? It was just awful. Oh well. It gave me something to smile about the entire race. Shame on me.

Anyways, the horn sounded and I was off! Believe me when I tell you that I went WAY too fast my first mile. I wasn't nervous or anything, I just went into this race thinking "It's only 3 miles, I want to see how fast I can really go". I ran the first mile in 7:45. Talk about speedy- for me anyways. Then I slowed it down because the heat was seriously taking its toll on me. I finished in 25:41! Not bad at all. I am really happy with this. If it was cooler out- I could've seriously knocked it out of the park! Heh, the best part was the age groups. If this race was a few weeks ago when I was 24, I would've come in 3rd!! I shouldv'e lied about my age! Haha... I ended up coming in 13th in my age group. I am NOT in a college town anymore!

So, some news. after thinking a lot about the Houston Marathon in January, I think I have made up my mind. I won't be doing that specific one. I actually found another marathon in the area on January 1st. I am really excited about it. It's the "Texas Marathon" and it's still in the Houston area (Kingwood). It's a smaller marathon. The cap is at 450 people (300 marathoners and 150 halfers)! One great things- it's CHEAP! I'm going to register and it's $55! Still expensive, but compare that to what I would be paying if I ran the Houston one! It's a Boston qualifier too- not that I will qualify or anything, but I at least feel like it's legit :-)

The best part about it: it's on a Saturday. I HATE marathons that are on Sundays. I know there are times you can't avoid it- but honestly. Religion aside, the next day is Monday and I would rather run on Saturday so I can rest the legs on Sunday before going back to work on Monday. It just makes sense to have them on Saturdays. If you work on Saturday, chances are you had at least a few months to request time off, right?

Anyways, if any of you are in the Houston area you should really really look into it. Click here to check it out! I am really excited!
